"We strongly believe that all women have the right to live safely, irrespective of which city they stay in. We also believe that a woman should be able to move around without fear or distress; without having to calculate which road she has to travel on so that she will be safe; without having to worry about the clothes she wears or the people she is with."
SEEW Nepal and SAFECITY India are jointly working on documenting sexual harassment and abuse in public spaces in and around Kathmandu.
SEE-W(social empowerment by empowering women) is a non-profit organization established to work for women empowerment through economic independence and skill enhancement.
SAFECITY is an information aggregation platform to help identify hotspots in a city where abuse has been reported. SAFECITY is a project that helps to identify locations where women have experienced or witnessed any type of sexual harassment – verbal comments, graphic behavior, menace… anything.
If every 20 minute someone is raped and not all rapes are reported, can we imagine the number of people who get harassed on the road? While not all harassment can be reported to the police, it matters to the girls/women in that area. We do understand that this is a complex problem that we are dealing with and there isn’t a single solution that can help change things. However multiple efforts channelized for the same cause in a focused manner may bring the desired change. We also understand that some of these solutions are a process and not an event and that they will take time to be implemented, as various aspects have to be debated. By starting this project we wish to highlight a serious social issue and we believe we are taking a step towards changing the way our society thinks and reacts. In time we hope it will lead to a safe and non-violent environment for all.
As a society and as individuals, we tend to ignore these cases and feel helpless. Over a period
of time, we accept it as part of our daily routine. This leads to under communication and
under reporting of the issue. If there are poor official statistics, the problem is not visible and
is not a true representation of the actual problem. The perpetrator on the other hand becomes
emboldened over a period of time. Therefore we need to break our silence and document
every instance of harassment and abuse in public spaces so that we can find the most
effective solutions at the neighborhood level.
Our main objective is to:
• Create awareness on street harassment and abuse and get women and other
disadvantaged communities to break their silence and report their personal
experiences.
• Collate this information to showcase location based trends.
• Make this information available and useful for individuals, local communities and
local administration to solve the problem at the local level. !
This data which maybe anonymous, gets aggregated as hot spots on a map
indicating trends at a local level. The idea is to make this data useful for individuals, local communities and local administration. Here is the first cut.
